Digital Cameras

If you haven't noticed, film cameras are beginning to become an oddity. Worried about how you can replace your trusty old 35mm camera? Perhaps your a grandma or grandpa and the kids want you to get into the 21st century. Maybe you are the type that doesn't like to use computer. Maybe you don't even have a computer. You don't need to be a computer genius to use a digital camera. You don't even need a computer!

Good digital cameras are now very affordable. It's easy to find a good quality digital camera that will take pictures just as well as your trusty 35mm. It's now easy to use a digital camera even without a computer. That was not always the case. You will probably need a little bit more help, but steps in this guide will show you how easy it is to use a digital camera without even owning a computer.

The first step, if you haven't already taken it, is to get a good quality digital camera. You don't need to get the most expensive model in the store. You should however, choose a camera made by a well-known photographic camera manufacturer. I highly recommend a Nikon or Canon. You want to start looking at cameras that have a resolution of at least six megapixels. At this resolution, you'll get results as good as your 35mm camera. Since you will not be using a computer that often, a large preview screen is also something to look for in the model you choose. Just remember when it comes to showing your pictures there are much better ways than trying to have people crowd around the back of your camera. In a number

Now that you have a good digital camera, we want to make sure you get the most out of it. Start by checking the manual, and find out how to set the camera to the highest quality JPEG setting. Once this is done, forget that the quality setting can be changed. Avoid the temptation of using lower quality settings so that you can fit more pictures on the memory card. Since you will probably be making more prints than someone who views pictures on a computer, you'll want the extra quality so those prints look great.

You'll also want to invest in several additional memory cards. You will need a few more than someone who has a computer to save the memory card to more often than you can. You'll also want to use the preview screen on your camera to check for bad pictures and erase them. Always remember to be very careful when you erase the picture and make sure you are only erasing one and not the whole card! This is a very easy mistake to make, so be extra careful.

Now that you have those great digital pictures, how are we to save and view them? Since we're trying to do this without a computer, we'll be treating your digital pictures very much like film. You're going to need to get them developed. When your memory card or cards get full, you will need to go someplace where there is a kiosk for digital cameras. This may be a camera store, drugstore, or even Wal-Mart.

I am going to suggest you start with a local camera store, if possible. There, you should hopefully get some expert advice on how to use the kiosk. I suggest you try to do this your first time at a time when the store is not very busy. What you'll want to do is make a DVD or CD that includes every image on your memory card. You will also want to make an index print so you can tell which DVD has which digital images. Keep in mind that you may need many index prints for a large memory card. Some kiosks will only let you save images to CD or DVD that you have ordered for prints. If this is the case, take your business elsewhere. You should be able to find one that will let you make a CD or DVD without having to make prints. You now have the digital equivalent of negatives. Make sure that you keep your DVD and index prints together in a safe place.

Viewing digital photos is becoming easier and easier. Most new DVD players will allow you to view your digital images by simply placing the DVD or CD in the player. His is a good way to decide which images you want to use for reprints, without having to stand at a the kiosk for an hour. There are also some new portable DVD players, that have a memory card slot for viewing digital photos. This is a simple and inexpensive option to a computer if you want to view your digital photos immediately. There are also some cool things like digital picture frames that you can use to display digital photos.

Make sure that you print your favorite digital photos. Putting your digital prints an album is the most relaxing way to share your photographs. You don't need a computer to look at your digital photos. Eventually, you may want to decide to invest in a computer. There are many advantages to digital photography in owning a computer. But there is no hurry. You can enjoy digital photography without a computer.

Digital Cameras- Choosing The Right Digital Camera For A Gift

That special someone has been hinting that they would like a new digital camera. Maybe, you have just decided on your own that they would like one. Yet, how to you choose the right camera? How much do you need to spend to get a good one? What brand should you choose? Where should you buy it? What about megapixels? All important questions, but unless you really know photography and digital cameras, it is easy to get the wrong answers.

First, I'll assume that person you are giving the digital camera to as a gift has not told you which camera they want, I they have, it is easy to find a place online that has a good price and order it. Just make sure that the warranty for the camera covers whatever country you live by avoiding grey-market cameras.

The next step is to decide what your budget is and what type of photography the person likes to do. At the low end, you should be able to find a very good point-and-shoot digital camera for $200-$300. In the $300-$400 range, for just a little more, you can get a much higher resolution camera with the latest image chip technology. If the person is someone who wants to become a photographer someday, or an advanced hobbyist, you will want to look into a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) like the Canon Digital Rebel series. These cost about $800 with a lens. Nikon has a competing model also. The DSLR's usually have better performance then point-and-shoot models and the ability to change lenses. They also have the highest image quality.

What brand of digital camera should you buy? I always recommend Canon or Nikon. These two manufacturers have dominated the film market because of their reputation for excellent products. They have the most experience in photography and are the choice of most professionals. Although many consumer electronics companies do have some good cameras, just because they make a good TV does not mean they make a good camera. Salesmen like to push them because the markup is often higher on non-photographic brands. My personal favorite is Canon, but I would never be disappointed if someone bought me a Nikon.

As a professional, I have often been asked the question about which camera brand. More than once, after asking my opinion, the person would argue about some consumer electronics brand that had so many megapixels and so many more features must be better. They would argue that it was a much better camera. A month or two later would come the next wave of people. This group would be asking if buying a used camera from a friend is a good idea. Strange, but it always seems to be the model that a month or two before was so much better that what I recommended. Buy a good camera from Nikon or Canon. You will be glad you did.

So what about megapixels? More is not always better. First, for casual picture takers I recommend a camera that has about 6 megapixels. Never buy anything less than a 5 megapixel camera. A six megapixel camera will produce images that rival a 35mm camera which has been the standard for years. This will keep the camera useful for a long time. For all but professional use (and even for many professionals) and 8 megapixel camera is more than enough.

There have been some problems with noise on high pixel count point-and-shoot digital cameras. While the resolution may be nice with a 10 megapixel camera from a consumer electronics company, you may find a 7-8 megapixel camera from a genuine camera company produces a high quality of image. DSLR's from Canon and Nikon do not have the noise problems usually seen in point-and-shoot cameras. Do not forget that larger image sizes need a faster computer and more space to archive on a computer. A real waste, since most people never make anything larger than an 8x10 print.

A higher pixel count is an easy way for camera manufacturers to demonstrate one camera may be better than another, even though it is something that most people pay extra for and do not really use. The most important improvements in digital cameras right now are in the areas of shadow and highlight detail, low noise, improved ISO settings and quality. Unfortunately, better shadow detail does not make as good an ad as 20 megapixels.

There are my suggestions for buying a digital camera as a gift. On the low end, look for a 6 megapixel point-and-shoot digital camera. On the high, end look for 8 megapixel point-and-shoot or a DSLR. You can save quite a bit buying a digital camera online. If you think you need advice, do not go to a consumer electronics store and ask a salesman. Find a true local camera store that specializes in selling cameras. Get your advice there and then reward them by buying the camera from them.

Digital Cameras vs Film Cameras

The debate is on: digital cameras vs. film cameras. Ever since digital cameras first came out, people have been plotting digital cameras against film cameras. Which one is better? Which one is best for you?

Of course, one type of cameras is not necessarily better than the other type. That is the problem with the whole "digital cameras vs. film cameras" ordeal. Each type of camera is great for different reasons.

Here are some of the benefits of digital cameras:

  • · You have immediate results. You can see the photo you took, immediately after you took it.
  • · You can "develop" your film whenever you want... you do not have to wait until you are done with a roll of film.
  • · You can delete from your camera photos that you do not like.
  • · Your photos do not have to be perfect. You can take an imperfect photo and then later make it perfect by using photo software.
  • · You can take as many photos as you want. Many memory cards have a ton of memory these days!
  • · You can review and show people your photos straight from the camera.
  • · They can be made very small (they do not have to make room to hold a bulky roll of film, only a thin memory card).
  • · Although they used to be quite expensive, prices are going down and they are now quite affordable.
  • · Digital photographs are less likely to appear grainy.
  • · Many say that color quality is better in digital photographs.
  • · The technology of digital cameras is constantly improving.

Here are some of the benefits of film cameras (although this list is shorter, realize that it is these few things may weigh more heavily on your decision than the many things stated above):

  • · Although much art can be made with digital cameras, many consider it to be a truer, purer art if taking with a film camera. After all, it takes much more skill to set up a photograph perfectly in the first place than to go back and photoshop it after the fact. This is, perhaps, one of the most important things that you can consider in the debate of film cameras vs. digital cameras.
  • · Sometimes you do not want immediate results. Sometimes it is exciting to not know what your photographs will look like until you receive them. It is like unwrapping a present.
  • · It is easy to go buy a new roll of film when out on vacation if you run out of "memory..." It is much easier to find and buy a roll of film than a new memory card.
  • · You can still get your film camera photos put onto a CD... meaning that you can still download them onto your computer and even photoshop them if you desire to do so.
  • · The zoom on a film camera is always optical - this means that if you zoom in, you are going to get a better, close-up photograph that is still of excellent resolution. With a digital camera, many of the zooms are digital (not all)... this means that although you are zooming in, you are merely cropping the photograph, something that you can do with your photo software at home.
  • · Many consider film cameras to be easier to use.
  • · Generally, the resolution of a film camera is better (but this changes if you get a very high resolution digital camera... 7 megapixels or more).

Thus, the winner of the debate of digital cameras vs. film cameras is totally up to you. It depends on what is most important to you.

Digital Cameras -- Choosing The Perfect Digital Camera For Summer 2006

Digital cameras come in all shapes and sizes. Which one is right for you? Would you like one to slip into a pocket or would you prefer something larger with a wide range of features. Deciding which type is right for you is the first step on the road to choosing your perfect digital camera.

I have divided up the types of digital cameras available into six different categories.

Simple Point and Shoot

These are the most basic and easy to use digital camera. They are also the cheapest. To get up and running with this type of digital camera all you really need to do is load the battery and memory card. Once you have done that it is simply a case of turning the camera on and taking pictures.

The downsides of this type of camera are often small LCD screens, fast use of batteries, shutter delay and low build quality

Suggested cameras: Canon Powershot A430, Sony DSC S600 and Panasonic DMC LS2.

High Quality Point and Shoot

The first thing that is noticeable with this type of digital camera is a big step up in build quality and a very stylish design. In terms of features it may not have any more than a simple point and shoot model. Picture quality is normally an improvement from the more basic cameras. This type of camera still remains easy to use.

These cameras tend to be considerably more expensive than the simple point and shoot models.

Suggested cameras: Canon Powershot SD700 IS (European name: IXUS 800 IS), Casio Exilim EX-Z850 and Panasonic DMC FX01.

Point and Shoot with Extra Features

In terms of build quality and design these cameras tend to resemble the simple point and shoot models with one or two improvements such as larger LCD screens. They offer manual exposure features that are likely to appeal to people who are more serious about their photography. These cameras also retain a fairly compact body size.

Suggested cameras: Canon Powershot A700, Canon Powershot A610 and Sony DSC W100.

Pocket Sized

Pocket sized digital cameras tend to be more or less slim versions of the high quality point and shoot models. This is the most convenient type of digital camera as it is easy to slip into a pocket and take anywhere with you.

In terms of picture quality they are usually not quite as good as either the high quality point and shoot models or the point and shoot with extra features cameras.

Suggested cameras: Canon Powershot SD600 (European name: IXUS 60), Sony DSC T9 and Sony DSC T30.

Super Zoom

Super zoom digital cameras are quite different. These are larger cameras with features similar to those you would expect to find on a traditional 35mm SLR camera. In terms of style and design they also have a resemblance to those cameras too. These are aimed more at people who are serious about photography. The longer zoom lens can make them far heavier than the smaller compacts.

Obviously these cameras are too big for a pocket so you need to consider how you are going to carry them around with you. A good quality camera bag is well worth considering.

Suggested cameras: Canon Powershot S3 IS, Sony DSC H2, Fuji Finepix S9000 (European name: S9500) and Fuji Finepix S5200 (European name: S5600).

Digital SLR

If you are looking for the best quality and also a high degree of flexibility then you are likely to find Digital SLR cameras rather tempting. Prices have fallen dramatically over the past couple years making them affordable to photo enthusiasts as well as professionals. Once you add on the cost of a couple of high quality lenses buying one is still a considerable investment. Therefore I would only suggest buying one if you are serious about photography or intend to spend plenty of time getting to know your camera.

Suggested entry level Digital SLR cameras: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (European name: EOS 350D) and Nikon D50

Top of the Line Digital Cameras

If you think that digital cameras are for snapshots only, then you obviously haven't heard about SLR (Single Lens Reflex) digital cameras. SLR is a type of camera which has one lens for composing the frame and capturing the image. SLR cameras are also known as TTL (through-the-lens) cameras.

An SLR camera displays an image through the viewfinder that is exactly the same image as the camera sees and is exactly the same image that the camera is going to record when you release the shutter.

An SLR camera provides a much more accurate image through the viewfinder than a digital camera produces on its LCD because the LCD does not faithfully reproduce the colors and light intensity that is actually entering the camera.

The top of the line SLR digital cameras rival the best film-based SLR cameras and are designed for serious hobbyists and professional photographers. Digital SLR cameras are much larger, bulkier, and heavier than traditional digital
cameras.

The SLR uses a mirror that is located behind the lens as well as an optical device known as a pentaprism to channel the light that enters the camera's lens to the optical finder. When you release the shutter the mirror moves out of the way and the image is captured in the same way as any digital camera.

The better digital SLR cameras let you mount different lenses just like their film-based counterparts do. Many of your existing 35mm lens may be compatible with a digital SLR. If you have a large lens collection then you should definitely look for a digital SLR that is compatible with them.

Because the digital SLR cameras are more professional, they come with a hefty price tag. A 6-megapixel Nikon D100 runs around $2,000 and the 11-megapixel Canon 1D runs near $8,000. This is for the camera body only and does not include a lens! This is why I mentioned earlier that you should look for a digital camera that will mount your existing lens collection. Just a good quality zoom lens can run you at least $3,000 and can climb as high as $10,000 depending upon the features!

Of course, there are also starter-priced digital SLR cameras available. The Olympus E-20N, a 5.0-megapixel SLR camera, which includes a non-replaceable lens that is capable of duplicating a 35 mm to 140 mm lens, runs around $3500.

These prices are not out of line if you make your living shooting pictures. You can actually create additional revenue streams when you shoot digital pictures, instead of film-based ones, by offering image enhancement options and all sorts of digital FX options for thee prospective bride and groom's on their treasured wedding album.

If all of this sounds a bit too expensive for your blood, then you'll probably find all of the digital camera that you'll ever need way down in the $99 to $500 price range and you'll never have to worry about buying extra lenses. Digital SLR cameras aren't for everyone but, if they're for you, then there are
plenty of models to look at. SOme of the best are made by Canon, Olympus and Nikon which are familiar names in the photography world.

Digital Cameras - The Perfect Photography Tool

Each step ahead with the technology makes the things better. This goes perfectly right for the digital cameras. A digital camera is a device, which works with digital technology for taking the photographs. It is the best thing to have happened in the field of photography till now. With digital cameras, photography has become more instant, convenient and better.

The basic idea of digital camera becoming a hit among the masses is that it is absolutely different from its predecessor devices. The old conventional cameras used to be dependent entirely on the chemical and mechanical processes to develop the images. They were so uncomfortable to handle. More so, they used to deliver poor quality images that did not satisfy the users. People were not happy with the working of these old and uncomfortable cameras and were waiting for some new technology.

The digital cameras after their invention have broken all the boundaries. They are smart, instant and high-tech. They are so easy-to-handle that even the kids can produce high quality photos from them. It does not take much to understand the working of the digital technology. They are the trend of the modern times ready to deliver all your needs, in just a few seconds.

The digital cameras have in-built sensors which record all the images electronically. There is no system of film being inserted into them. The photos get stored in the memory chip of the camera. These images can later be transferred on to the computer or can be directly sent for printing. Moreover the digital cameras also let you decide which photos you want to keep and which ones you want to delete.

The new approach of the digital cameras has been tremendously successful. As the digital imaging technology is becoming better and improving each day, the digital cameras are becoming too popular. They are emerging as a high quality and high performance alternatives of the traditional cameras.

The basic components of the digital cameras are still alike traditional cameras. Same like a traditional camera, the digital camera has a series of powerful lenses. These lenses focus the light in order to create an image of the particular object you want to shoot. The basic difference is that in place of focusing this light on a piece of a traditional film, the digital camera focuses the light on a semiconductor device, which electronically records the light. A built-in computer then disperses this electronic info down into several digital data. All the interesting, fun and advanced digital cameras are the perfect results of this digital technology.

If you are going to buy a digital camera, it is important to understand the basics of its working. You will be able to identify the best digital camera for yourself by answering some of the similar questions. Why exactly do you need a digital camera? Will you use it to earn a living for yourself? Will you upload your photos on the Internet and earn from them? Do you need the best quality digital camera? Are you an average user of digital camera seeking fun or a serious professional photographer?

Everyone is behind some sort of entertainment and there will be a variation only in their interest. Some have a special interest in photography and in order to satisfy their interest there are well featured digital cameras are available in the market from all leading brands. Earlier, people were using SLR cameras and now the trend has changed where they have now switched over to digital camera. A great difference lies in capturing the images from the normal SLR camera with the digital camera.

The quality in capturing images through digital camera is far better which gives a natural look for the images that are captured. Resolution, sensor, brightness and colour of the images differ from that of the other model cameras. In the conventional type of camera, film is used to capture the images, but in the digital camera it does not require any film to capture the image because they are stored electronically both in audio and video format. When compared with the conventional cameras, the storage capacity in the digital camera is high.

Digital cameras are used to store images in the digital format whereas in the conventional type camera the images are stored in analog format. Cameras are available in two different types meant for amateur and professional users. For those who like to learn photography, the conventional SLR cameras help the most. Because in these type of cameras, the settings has to be done manually which paves way for the amateur users to learn more about the technical features involved in it.

Video camcorders, digital cameras and webcams are the different type of cameras used. The digital camera technology has attained great heights with the help of CCD digital technology. The shutter speed, digital zoom, video motion detention and menu driven programmability are some of them to mention. The other advantages of the digital camera are the automatic light control, aperture and shutter speed. Apart from the camera, few other factors that help for better quality output are the tripod, zooming lens are some of the accessories to mention.

So, taking these advantages into consideration, the photography lovers are more convenient using the digital camera because they are light weighted and has user-friendly options putting the users at ease in using the digital camera. Also there are online guides are available for the beginners who are planning to buy a new digital camera. The new users can surf through the net for valuable tips and guidance for handling the digital camera.

Digital Cameras - Setting the Image Size

Setting the size of an image is something specific to digital cameras, it just didn't exist on film cameras. One effect of changing the size of image your camera takes is that it also affects the size of the digital image file your camera stores on its memory card and therefore the number of pictures you can store on any given size of card.

This is size in terms of computer memory or storage and is expressed in kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes. Digital cameras, like all other digital devices, produce digital files that need a certain amount of space to store them. The image size setting on your camera will significantly affect the size of the resultant image file.

It may be easier to think in terms of how many pictures it will take to fill up your memory card. You will get the maximum number of pictures if the image size is at it's lowest setting. By the same token, you will get the minimum number of pictures when this is at it's highest setting.

In practice, this means that if getting as many pictures as possible on your card is the most important thing to you, then you need to adjust the image size to the minimum available setting.

Image size has always been an important aspect of cameras even before they became digital. With film cameras it was controlled by the size of the film that the camera would accept. A 35 millimetre camera was called that because that was the size of film it used. If you wanted larger images, you needed a camera that would accept larger film. These were called medium or large format cameras.

When digital cameras came along the idea of being able to take different sizes of image with the same camera became possible. This is simply done by changing the image size setting in your camera. It is perfectly feasible to change the image size between shots and store different sizes of image on the same card.

One thing that hasn't changed is the effect of using a larger or smaller size of image whether it's a digital image or the size of the negative you got from a film camera. A bigger image (or negative or transparency) will produce a better image. Most adverts for cameras or other sources of information about digital photography will tell you just that, but it's not the whole story.

The first thing to consider is what exactly is meant by a "better image". Things like the accurate reproduction of colour, the image noise produced by the camera or the amount of distortion produced by the lens are entirely unaffected by image size but play a large part in deciding if one picture is technically better than another. It is certainly the case that two different cameras can produce the same size of image but with very different overall technical quality.

That is something to think about when looking to purchase a new camera but it's not under consideration here because this is just about the effect of altering the size setting on your camera. The only thing that changes when you do this is the "resolution" of the images your camera produces.

What is resolution?

The word resolution means the ability to see (or resolve) fine detail in a printed photograph. A high resolution image will have a lot more visible detail than a low resolution image. The image size setting on your camera may even be called resolution because they are so directly related. A large image means high resolution and a small image means low resolution.

Please note that this ability to resolve fine detail only applies when you print your digital photograph and not when you are viewing it on a computer monitor. Viewing a high resolution picture on screen will allow you to zoom in and look at the detail you have captured, but that's it. When you zoom out to see the whole picture then the resolution of the image you see will be that of the screen itself, it physically cannot be any higher than that.

You can prove this for yourself by simply comparing a high and low resolution image side by side on your computer. As long as they are visibly the same size on screen, they will have the same resolution. No matter how close you get to the screen, you will not see any more detail in the larger, high resolution picture.

In practice this means that if you only ever view your digital images on a computer and never print them then you can use your camera's smallest image size setting and gain the benefit of being able to store lots more pictures on your memory card.

On the other hand, if you want to make big prints from your camera's pictures, then you should set the image size to the largest you have available. Another thing you can do with a large image is to print (or view) only a small part of it. This is sometimes called "cropping". So, if you think you might want to do this at any time then you should set your image size or resolution to its maximum.

The size of a digital image is measured in megapixels, which simply means one million pixels. A pixel is the smallest part of a digital image and is a single colour. If you zoom in close enough to any digital image, you can see the individual pixels that it is made of, all neatly lined up in rows and columns.

You might have noticed that, so far, I have not made any mention of the actual numbers involved. Whereas, every reference to a digital camera you come across will usually include mention of the number of megapixels it has. This is an indication of the maximum size of image that the camera can produce.

The actual size of the image only matters when it comes to comparing cameras but, here is an indication of how megapixels relate to resolution and print sizes. A high resolution print at 6 x 4 inches requires just over 2 megapixels. An A4 print (roughly 8 x 11 inches) at the same resolution needs an 8 megapixel image.

The situation is complicated by the fact that it is easy to resize a digital image after it has been taken. This is called "interpolation" and some editing programs (and even some printers) can do it very well. So well in fact, that they can fool the eye into thinking that your picture has more resolution than is actually there. Added to that is the fact that the human eye has an upper limit to the detail it can resolve.

You could print an 8 megapixel image at 6 x 4 inches and although technically it would be at a much higher resolution than the 2 megapixel version, no human in the world has good enough eyesight to tell. You also have to take into account that large pictures tend to be viewed from further away than small ones, which greatly affects how much detail people can actually see. All in all, the whole issue of image size and resolution is at least partly a matter of personal taste.

When it comes to setting up your camera however, it doesn't matter what the actual largest size is, just that it's the largest available from your camera. You should use this setting if you ever want to make big prints or do further editing work like cropping and printing just a part of the picture.

If you have never checked the size setting on your camera, I definitely recommend that you do so. Most cameras will give you a choice of either small, medium or large for the size and, when they first come out the factory, they are usually set to medium. I'm sure the manufacturers' figure that this is a good compromise setting for most people but personally, I think that it's the setting that is least likely to be right for most people.

For example, if you have an 8 megapixel camera, then a medium setting is likely to be around 4 megapixels. This is too big to view on screen without shrinking it down and, if this is the only way you want to see your pictures, it is quite wasteful of space on your memory card and hard drive. In these cases you should use the minimum size unless that looks too small on screen (you may have a very big screen).

The other side of the coin is that, if you have spent your hard earned money on an 8 megapixel camera because you want to print big, high quality pictures or do some photo editing then, unless you have the image size set to maximum, you wont be taking 8 megapixel pictures. You could have saved your money and just bought a 4 megapixel camera.

So in conclusion, go and check the size setting on your digital camera, you want the minimum size for viewing and email and the largest size for big prints or editing. Medium is usually not much use to anyone. Let's not compromise!

Digital Cameras In Todays Society

Digital cameras have become mainstream cameras because they are extremely easy to use and offer a host of wonderful features. Digital cameras connect to PC via USB so you can transfer your photos easily for archiving, editing, and printing. Digital cameras make it easy to share pictures both online and in print. Digital cameras with resolution in the four to five megapixel range are capable of producing professional-quality images.

Cameras

The major advantage of digital cameras is the ability to take multiple pictures at no extra cost and then printing only the best ones. Cameras meant for automatic point-and-shoot photos, with a 3x zoom lens, will serve casual shooters as well as dedicated hobbyists much of the time. Digital cameras with less than one megapixel are inexpensive, but they usually lack key features. Cameras with higher resolutions of 7, 8, 10 or even more megapixels give you the latitude to create large reprints, or to crop and manipulate images with photo-editing software without degrading them. All digital cameras have a built-in computer, and all of them record images electronically. Since film still provides better picture quality, digital cameras have not completely replaced conventional cameras. All the fun and interesting features of digital cameras come as a direct result of striving to improve customer needs for high quality, low cost photos.

Images

Images are made up of tiny cells (also called pixels). Images taken at higher resolutions will look much clearer and sharper when printed, and large prints will look better. You can even select only the best and copy them from your computer back onto the camera's storage device so you can give an edited slide show of just the best images. Once images are in digital form, you can start to take pieces from various images and paste them into other images. Digital photography now makes it possible to put all of your images on the Web and bore the entire world instead of just your friends and family. One nice thing about digital cameras is that you can show your images on a TV set.

Memory

Memory Most digital cameras support some type of removable memory card for storing your images. You should buy as large a memory card as your camera can accept, as the memory cards that are included with the cameras are usually not nearly big enough to hold a good number of high quality pictures. Two popular memory card types are CompactFlash and SmartMedia cards. Both types of memory are similar in price and performance but CompactFlash cards are more widely used. How many pictures will fit in the memory. The exact number depends on the size of the memory card (or other type of storage used), the camera's resolution, the compression quality setting, the exact type of camera, and even the type of pictures taken. If you can't fit enough pictures in the memory, you should buy a higher capacity memory card instead.

Digital cameras are distinguished by their resolution--how many pixels, or picture elements, the image sensor contains. Digital cameras give you extraordinary control over images. Digital cameras are perfect for learner photographers as the images can be displayed immediately. Digital cameras generally need a computer to manipulate and print images, but the technology is evolving rapidly, and photo printers that work without a computer are now mass-market items. Digital cameras have high power requirements, and over time have become increasingly smaller in size, which has resulted in an ongoing need to develop a battery small enough to fit in the camera and yet able to power it for a reasonable length of time. Digital cameras emerging popularity is attributed to the vastly improved photography experience they afford, through instant viewing, deletion, annotation, and control over reprint size and quantity.

Few Facts Of Digital Cameras

A digital camera captures images in a digital format, unlike a conventional camera, which captures images using a photographic film.

History:

Using a mosaic photosensor, Eugene F. Lally of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory first showed how still photos could be produced in a digital domain. An engineer at Eastman Kodak, Steve Sasson, used solid-state CCD chips to build a prototype digital camera having a resolution of 0.01 megapixel, and recorded black and white digital images to a magnetic cassette tape. With this prototype model, Steve took the first image in December of 1975 taking 23 seconds to capture it.

In 1988, Fuji DS-1P became the first digital camera that captured images as a computerized file. However, the camera never entered the U.S. market. In 1991, Kodak DCS-100 was the first commercially available digital camera, which used a 1.3 megapixel sensor. With the advancement of technology, modern digital cameras have become multifunctional and are now capable of capturing audio/video and still photographs.

Benefits:

1 - You get superior image quality. Digital cameras can offer good to excellent image resolution.

2 - You get a fair price. A digital camera is reasonably priced and is affordable.

3 - You can transfer the pictures to your laptop. You can easily connect the digital camera to your laptop and transfer the pictures in your hard disk.

4 - You can print in large sizes. Due to its high resolution, pictures can be printed in large sizes by any plotter.

5 - You can email the pictures to your friends. You can send the pictures by email to your loved ones.

6 - You can store the images in CDs or hard disk. Once the pictures are transferred from digital camera to the computer, permanent storage on a CD or hard disk is possible.

7 - You can take the camera in your pocket while you travel. The small size of the digital camera makes traveling with it easy and a pleasure.

8 - You can move in close to your subject. Zoom lenses offer close-ups of your subject with sharp focus. You can take very good close-ups of flowers, bugs, stamps, coins, etc.

9 - You can rework the image in a computer. Any photo editing software can rework the images taken.

10 - You can take good pictures even in low-light situations. Due to flexible over sensitivity or ISO equivalents, digital cameras can easily take detailed pictures even in low-light conditions.

11 - You can take quality still photos of moving objects. Sports and fashion photography can be easily accomplished due to the fast burst rate of digital cameras.

12 - You save money. There is no need of buying photographic films, developing them into negatives and positives. Moreover, the batteries are usually rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which last a long time.

13 - You can choose as per your needs and fancy. Many models are available like standard digital camera, underwater digital camera, waterproof digital camera, compact digital camera, and the professional digital camera.

Storage Media:

Digital cameras use memory to capture and store images. Some of the storages media used are onboard flash memory, 3.5" floppy disks, video floppy disk, PCMCIA hard drives, CD or DVD, CompactFlash memory cards, Microdrives, Memory Stick, SD/MMC, MiniSD Card, MicroSD Card, XD-Picture Card, SmartMedia, and FP Memory.

Power:

Digital cameras consume a lot of power, which is supplied by powerful, small in size batteries. Batteries are broadly divided into two groups, namely, off-the-shelf and proprietary. Off-the-shelf batteries are like AA, CR2, CR-V3, AAA, and RCR-V3. They are lithium-ion (Li-Ion) or Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. Standard AA non-rechargeable alkaline batteries either do not work or work for only a very short time in most cameras.

Proprietary batteries are built as per the manufacturer`s custom specifications and are usually available as aftermarket replacement parts. Generally, lithium ion batteries are widely used as proprietary batteries for digital cameras.

Types of Digital Cameras

By Amber Lowery

If you are in the market to purchase a digital camera, you have surely seen several different types of cameras. It isnt exactly clear what the differences between the types are, and it can be confusing trying to choose the digital camera thats right for you. In this article, we wil discuss the different types of cameras so that you can better understand what to look for in purchasing a digital camera.

Point and Shoot Digital Cameras

Most consumer cameras on the market today fall into the category of Point and Shoot digital cameras. These cameras usually provide resolutions of between 2 and 4 megapixels (million pixels). These cameras are the digital version of your typical 35mm consumer camera.

A point and shoot digital camera is designed to do just that - take snapshots. They provide limited flexability with options, although many newer models have some limited options for special effects. The image quality from a point and shoot digital camera is generally good enough for common uses, such as auction photos, and even 4 X 6 prints.

If you just want a standard, entry level digital camera for family snapshots and auction photos, then a point and shoot digital camera is a budget conscious choice.

Semi Professional Digital Cameras

A semi professional digital camera is a more advanced version of a point and shoot digital camera. Typicaly, these cameras provide resolutions between 5 and 6 megapixels (million pixels). They also often offer the user additional settings and greater control over the camera. The image quality of these cameras is good enough to produce clear prints up to about 8 x 10.

A semi professional digital camera may be the best option for you if you seek greater creative control than you can get with a point and shoot model. The increased flexability does come with a price. Most semi professional models are priced much higher than point and shoot models.

Digital SLR Cameras

If you are a serious or professional photographer, no less than a Digital SLR model will do. SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. Digital SLR cameras are very similar in operation to their 35 mm SLR countereparts. Also, many camera companies (such as Cannon and Nikon) have built their digital SLR models to be compatible with 35 mm SLR lenses. This is a great benefit to professional photographers who can select a model that is compatible with their existing lenses.

Digital SLR cameras provide an amazing ammount of creative control over the camera and the resuting images. Also, these cameras provide resolutions over 6 Megapixels and can produce prints of poster size without noticable pixelazation.

A Digital SLR camera (without lenses) is a pricey investment indeed. Currently, you can expect to spend $1500 or more on the camera alone. Accessories and lenses cost extra.

Digital Cameras - Time to Dump Them?

By Bruce Santucci

Digital cameras are changing the world of photography. They are great pieces of technology that are not hard to learn to use. They are attractive and appeal to many consumers because of their availability in a wide range of prices and features. Digital cameras are very popular devices these days with good reason. They offer many advantages when compared to old, film-based cameras.

Cameras are now found in PDAs and cell phones and even in newer vehicles. The advantages include the ability to keep and print only the photos you want. Their extremely small size makes them very easy to carry around. The easy sharing of photo files over the internet and the ability to adjust image output quality to match individual needs makes them almost indispensable for anyone who uses the internet meaningfully.

These cameras are perfect for normal amateur shots of friends, family, landscapes and other general views too. Many photographers get into digital photography because they can print photos from their home printers.

Digital cameras can range in price from less than $50 to more than $4,000. Cameras with less than one megapixel are inexpensive, but they usually lack important features. Digital cameras with resolution in the four to ten megapixel range are capable of producing professional-quality images. These cameras are designed for amateur intermediate and professional photographers with intermediate skills, and will be rich with features that may take you a month of study and practice to discover.

Compact digital cameras are designed to provide a moderate number of features, stylish looks, and often fit easily in your pockets. If you care more about features like interchangeable lenses, flashes, and other accessories, you will most likely have to consider a dSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera which are more expensive but offer outstanding features.

Only the most serious amateur photographer will demand the flexibility of these cameras, and of course, you should expect them to be larger and heavier than compact or standard models. For example, they won't fit in your pocket. You will also need to devote more time and practice to learn how to use them.

Accessories

There are a number of accessories available for digital cameras: battery chargers, underwater housings, slave flashes, tripods, carrying cases, neck straps, conversion lenses, remote controls, and printers to name a few. Each of these accessories will add to the cost of your camera but may be worth it if makes taking good photos easier.

Memory

Most digital cameras include some form of memory, whether it's built into the camera or is part of a separate memory card. When you

purchase one, it is very important to purchase at least a 2 megabyte memory card or more. These memory cards will help you to make the most of the features of the camera. If you enjoy taking short video segments, any extra memory will make that task much easier. It's often better to think of your digital camera the same way you look at a computer; the more memory, the better.

Warranties

Most cameras come with a limited one-year warranty from the manufacturer that covers defects only. If you plan to take your camera on backroad trips , up mountains, on river rafting trips, extended camping trips or to sports events, you would be wise to purchase the extended warranty that is often offered at the register. If, on the other hand, you will only be using it around the home for birthday parties, then you may be able to make do with the standard warranty that comes with the camera. Remember, digital cameras are not very sturdy and are susceptible to the elements.

Good Photography

Many people feel that digital photography has come of age. It is gradually on its way to becoming a mainstream consumer pastime, with the introduction of true photo-quality 8 million pixel cameras, low-cost toy and teen cameras, and high quality, affordable printing. A digital camera will so fundamentally change the way you think about photography that you will wonder how you ever got along without one. Recently, dramatic improvements in single-shot cameras and RAW image file processing have made single shot, CCD-based cameras almost completely dominant in commercial photography and digital photography as a whole.

For many consumers, this is an acceptable trade-off, especially if they are looking for a camera for their kids or want to experiment with digital photos without spending too much money. If you want to spend a thousand dollars, forget the standard digital cameras and go straight to any DSLR.

Digital picture taking is growing quickly because it offers the advantages of immediacy and ease of operation. Blogs on digital photography and how to use digital cameras abound. We're just beginning to realize the potential of what it can do for us. Popular photography magazines are crammed full of ads advertising very low prices for digital cameras. Just remember that digital photography is still photography. With the price of digital camera equipment and accessories dropping, the overall quality is continuing to rise with it. It is no wonder that digital photography is becoming a hobby of choice for many from every walk of life.
