Canon Technology Features
* Digic Imaging Processor: While much technical discussion of digital cameras centers around the optics and the CCD sensor, the complex task of image rendering is the job of the image processor--the "brains" of a digital camera. Canon's latest, exclusive DIGIC Imaging Processor significantly enhances digital camera performance in numerous areas. DIGIC's high-speed signal processing is combined with high-capacity buffering to give Canon digital cameras fast response and continuous shooting capability unmatched by other digital cameras. DIGIC delivers longer battery life and beautiful, rich color rendition with far fewer white saturation problems. And DIGIC's unequaled precision delivers clear, noise-free images that are demonstrably superior.
* iSAPS Technology: Canon iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology dramatically improves the performance of AF (Autofocus), AE (Auto Exposure), and AWB (Auto White Balance). Equipped with this "fore knowledge" Canon PowerShot cameras can optimize AF/AE/AWB settings for any given scene more rapidly and more effectively.
* Multi-point AiAF: Canon's wide-area, multi-point AiAF (artificial intelligence autofocus) automatically selects one or more focusing points based on factors, such as subject position and motion. You get fast, accurate AF whether you hold the camera horizontally or vertically, with stationary or moving subjects, with off-center subjects, and even in low-light/low-contrast lighting.

Direct Printing/Sharing
The PowerShot S410 introduces a new Print/Share button that speeds and simplifies printing to compatible Canon and PictBridge enabled printers and one-touch image transfer to Windows XP, Me, 2000, and 98 computers for use with image processing programs, uploading to the Internet, or placement in e-mail. When connected to a Canon Compact Photo printer, a Movie Print mode divides the selected clip into equal parts and prints thumbnails of a maximum 63 equally spaced frames onto a single sheet of Postcard Size Paper.

Images and video are stored on CompactFlash memory cards (Type I only) and the included 32 MB card holds approximately 21 images at the Large/Fine setting.

A. Canon Powershot S3 IS Review
The main attraction of the Canon Powershot S3 IS is its 12x optical zoom lens. This places the camera fairly and squarely in the super zoom category. I would say this is a camera for someone who enjoys photography and who will use a camera on a regular basis, but cannot afford a Digital SLR or is not committed enough to spend out for one. For any super zoom digital camera hand shake can cause problems. The Powershot S3 IS can help in this situation owing to built in optical image stabilisation.

In terms of features the Powershot S3 IS is one of the most advanced models below the level of Digital SLR. Many of the features it offers can be found in SLR models. Key features include fully manual exposure settings as well as aperture priority and shutter priority. Other advanced features include three metering modes (Evaluative, Centre-weighted average, Spot (centre or linked to focusing frame)), exposure compensation (+/- 2 EV in 1/3 stop increments), bracketing (1/3 - 2 EV in 1/3 stop increments) and ISO equivalents of Auto, High ISO Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400 and 800.

To help get colours right there are also a variety of white balance settings available. These are Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent H, Flash and Custom.

You also have a number of options when it comes to shooting movies. These include being able to shoot TV quality movies and also time lapse movies. Time lapse movies are where the camera takes a picture at set intervals. There is also a movie mode that lets you shoot a short burst of movie and play it back in slow motion. These movies are often used in analysis. In terms of image quality I was very impressed by the Powershot S3 IS. The images were crystal clear as the sharpness of each image really caught my eye. I was also able to take a great macro shot with the camera. As with other super zoom cameras the problem of purple fringing does pop up. This is where a thin purple line is added to the edges of light objects when they are caught by a bright light such as the sun.

I found the camera copes well with shots taken indoors in poor light too. The flash unit is powerful and the camera has a good focusing mechanism as well. An external flash unit can be bought separately from Canon to further boost performance when necessary.

The Powershot S3 IS is one of the more expensive super zoom digital cameras on the market. That said I still think this camera manages to offer good value for money. I have reviewed almost all the super zoom digital cameras available and the Powershot S3 IS is the best one available.

B. Canon PowerShot A700 Review
The main attraction of the Canon Powershot A700 is its 6x optical zoom lens. This is twice the length of a standard zoom. In addition to the increased zoom power the camera also has a number of features aimed at someone who is looking for more than a simple point and shoot digital camera. These include a fully manual exposure mode. The Powershot A700 is a six megapixel model.

I must admit to liking the Canon Powershot range of digital cameras in general and I found that the Powershot A700 upholds this reputation when it comes to picture quality. The images are very sharp. I also found the camera works well indoors or in lowlight situations.

Colours are strong without being overpowering and are well balanced. This helps to achieve a pleasing natural feel to skin tones in portrait shots. It also augers well for landscape style shots and many other every day type photos.

There is a good sized LCD screen (2.5 inches) to compose photos and access the menu. A viewfinder is also available if you prefer to use one. The Powershot A700 is one of the ever decreasing number of digital cameras to offer one.

An advanced movie mode available. In addition to the standard movie mode that allows you to shoot TV quality movies there is a second type of movie you can shoot. This records up to one minute of footage at a fast frames per second speed. Canon has set the pricing level above some digital cameras offering a longer 10x optical zoom lens. One factor than could work out in favour of this camera is the fact that it retains a fairly compact shape in comparison with the larger 10x optical zoom models.

It is a step up from a basic point and shoot digital camera so there are more features to get to know. In general I find the menu system that Canon use to be a bit harder to get to grips with than other brands.

The Powershot A700 runs on AA batteries and stores images on SD cards. Although there is a convenience to AA batteries I would suggest buying a set of rechargeable batteries to keep running costs down to a minimum.

Plastic rather than metal has been used for the camera body. Despite this I felt the camera still had a solid feel. In terms of size it is too large to fit comfortably into a pocket. The upside of this is that it fits well in the hand and the raised grip area on the front helps you to hold the camera steady while taking a shot.

All in all I was very impressed by the Canon Powershot A700. It offers more than a standard point and shoot camera.
